What is a ballotin de chocolat?

Although you might think that the term ballotin is just a more distinguished way of referring to the “chocolate box”, the prestigious design of this packaging is distinctive. Gourmets recognize it by its rectangular or trapezoidal shape, with slightly rounded or sloping edges and an ornamental ribbon.

This container, which combines elegance and practicality, was invented in Belgium in 1915. Louise Agostini, wife of the famous master chocolatier Jean Neuhaus, had the idea of protecting her chocolate delights in this innovative packaging. At the time, fine chocolates were usually packaged in paper cones or unsuitable bags. However, this risked crushing and mixing them, compromising their presentation. It was then used as a means of distinguishing oneself from others. Indeed, even today, the ballotin is used to demonstrate the artisanal quality of chocolates.
